Wow, Austin! Those are some really great ideas. It sounds to me like you're all about helping the little guy, keeping our country safe and the economy nice and strong, and promoting a free and democratic society. I mean, if our money was backed by something (like gold), that would stop inflation, which is really just a tax on the lower classes.Anyway, I sure do hope you win! Hazaa

But embroiling our military in sectarian violence only agitates further extremism and even in the worse case scenario, "blow back", which is actually the resentment that the Afghan people will have because we are interfering with their internal affairs, which makes us no longer the peacekeepers, but the bully. Spending all this money just to meddle is not worth it in our eyes and does more harm then good.

If the governent in power is doing things that we consider to be offensive to human life and the inherent dignity of the individual, then let us formally, as a Country, in parliament declare war on the regime and take the necessary action to win, with the whole country working towards this purpose.

My argument to bring the troops home comes in to play because I believe that we can do more help by for now taking our troops out of harms way and getting a fresh perspective on the situation.

I think what you are exressing is a very valid concern, and I believe therefore that this is a very delicate issue, and we do want to make sure that we are not abandoning our commitment to help the Afghan people, and defend freedom in way that we can.

yeah those are good and logical..but the way you are putting it. you are saying to keep all the money with in the country. the Afghanistans are the people that need the most help and the canadian troops didn't go in there looking for a war the went in there to help the victims of war
austindelrio (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
And to address the peacekeeping issue, I believe that Canada violates the spirit of peacekeeping by entering Afghanistan on aggressive terms and seeking to impose our will on a foreign people. We are not trying to resolve a civil conflict as much as we are trying to impose our own solution onto all parties involved. On these gounds, we have no moral standing to be there any longer.

Very quickly however it has become obvious that there is no longer a clear purpose in remaining there, other than to fight some loosely defined enemy of "the terrorists". This is an unacceptable mission and I certainly believe that our Canadian troops do not deserve to be subjected to this harm any longer, not to mention that the money can be put to much better use here at home. |
