the whole movie plot was pre-planned by alonzo.its a "leverage move" made by alonzo before hand to insure he's got the upperhand.why sacrifice guys already in the team when you can get the new guy to take the fall "if need be".who would the commission most likely side with? the rookie or the vet? hoyt being part of the plot already was also being(tested)by alonzo through out most of the movie.once alonzo knew he could'nt use hoyt for the team,hoyt had to go.unlucky for alonzo hoyt was his demise

Such a sinister smile at 3:54 , now that dude did a good job acting in this whole scene. He seems like a true rogue cop. Rogue cops don't act tough but are hardened by the job itself thus having no necessity to put on a facade. They can smile, joke, and laugh but still exude extreme toughness in the most nonchalant way.

Perhaps all the cops (even the ones not present at Roger's house) were in on it and who would know when the hole was dug? Maybe they could articulate that Roger was doing crooked shit and hit drugs there or something. Either way, it wouldn't be difficult to cover that up. 5 decorated officers all say the same thing and it's "not what you know, but what you can prove" as stated by Alonzo.
