Epiphone makes a les paul copy, also called a les paul.

if you want a les paul get a les pauL?? did you mean gibson or something? Because les paul is (as far as I know) a model, also made by different brands? Correct me if I'm wrong please :)

To protect the finish yes, but to me it always seemed like the pickguard just covered up more of the great sunburst finishes Gibson put out. Personally I like the look my Les Paul has without the pickguard and the washer that goes around the pickup switch. It makes it look like my guitar is streaking.
