The "Jake Brake" is used to retard the engine. could be by the piston, hydrolic, or exhaust. The most common type, the one u see in video is by the piston, all it does it open the exhaust valve about 10degrees BTDP(before top dead center) a cunt hair to let out the compressed air. Therfore it Negates(removes) the power stroke of the piston. great truck! charles- Engine City tech Student

Jacobs engine retarder.....hence 'jake' brake....it closes down the exhaust valves on a diesel engine, when not all the exhaust is permitted to evacuate it bogs the motor which slows the truck and in turn kills momentum and speed. Necessary in mountain country, annoying to listen to on flatlands. I love trucks but flatland jakers are bad for publicity. ;-)
