Nov 2007Prisoners at Cebu are considered the most dangerous offenders in the Philippines. But thanks to four hours of dance lessons a day, their behaviour has been transformed. Previously, Cebu prison was a wretched place ruled by rival gangs. But when the warden introduced dance lessons, everything changed. "Everyone became friends". Now the prisoners spend most of the day practising new routines. Videos of them dancing to 80s classics have become a big hit on YouTube.

That sucks. It's cool though, that your father was so dedicated. It just comes down to hard work, loyalty and dedication between Guards and management when it comes to things like this. It all has to be taken seriously, otherwise the inmates walk all over you before they get a chance to see that it's fun and good for them.

That's what comes to mind, but that's probably what everyone thought about the Filipino prison. These guys were the worst in their country. Are you saying that men in America are that much more dangerous than men in the Filipines? Or that men in the Filipines are pathetic compared to Americans? The warden said that the men knew he was tough, and he eliminated corrupt guards. If that sort of respect and management could be used in American prisons, the dance programs would probably work.

Thats true reitheneko, but if we did that with american prisons....gangs woulden't cooperate and the inmates would not be able to stand that close to each other without a riot or a single fight. I dunno im just speaking what comes to mind :/

I actually cried about halfway through this. It's probably the most inspiring thing I've seen. What would be a great idea is to instigate this in all prisons, and then hold dancing competitions between prisons. That way, inmates would work together, feel pride in their prison and fellow inmates, and have an overall goal other than just internet popularity.

One of the saddest things is, the conditions in the prison look better than some of the places I have visited when I went to the Philippines.Free food, a place to sleep- some 'free' people in the Philippines dream of those things. But one thing I noticed is similar; everyone is smiling.Keep smiling & dancing, Philippines! You're setting a good example! Filipinos/Filipinas everywhere are proud of you (including me.) =D
