Heather shows disordered unorganized thoughts in her conversations. The odd facial expressions she displays when she speaks is a side effect of the antipsychotic medication she is on. While some antipsychotic meds do not produce such side effects, not all schizophrenics response well to such medication.

this is a horrible illness and god bless those who must cope with it. Fortunately the latest medications and good care can make dramatic improvements in many of these patients. I hope that the stigma associated with this disease will be removed. Its an illness like any other illness.

You don't have to experience halucinations to have schizophrenia and different people have different levels of it. Also different people coap with it n different ways. My brither and i both have schizophrenia, but we are completely different in symptoms and duration of symptoms. Symtpoms can come and go, but i believe that the illness id always there.

schizophrenia is an illness with a organic basis not unlike diabetes, hypertension or cancer. The problem is the stigma attached to it and all the misconceptions that come with that. You can prevent Diabetes or Obesity but not this and nobody is immune to schizophrenia (1 % risk in a lifetime). Stop calling these poor people crazy...it might be you one day.

Heather, is a perfect definition of schizophrenics..like u saw in d video these ppl have a habit of making new words which r unknown 2 us and out of dictionary! If d woman in d video is her mom..she is treating her in just the right manner! I really appreciate her efforts!

My sister is schizophrenic, she does have delusions but non of the rest of what this girl displays...Like all illnesses their are different degrees of what you suffer from! I was diagnosed as a schizoid when I was in my early 20's, I like you take antipsychotic meds to help control things...

Does being schizophrenic mean that you have symptoms like hearing voices, hallucinations, and delusions? Is it possible to be schizophrenic and not exhibit these exact symptoms? I myself am a schizoid who shares similarities with the schizophrenic, like social withdrawal/isolation. However, I have never heard voices or had any hallucinations and delusions. Neither have I ever displayed behavior like Heather(disorganized thoughts). Yes, I don't quite understand schizophrenia.

I have schizophrenia, I'm leading a completely normal life with the help of meds. The difference between being off meds and medicated is profound. I have met people like heather in hospital...This video seems a world away from how I am now , to the point I question if I even have schizophrenia at all...

While I was in college I went to a lecture by Mr. Fred Frese. The man is amazing. In his early twenties (the time symptoms of schizophrenia usually start) he was diagnosed schizophrenic. However, some thirty years later he has a family, a PhD in psychology, and lectures at colleges across the nation. The man is a walking miracle. I hope with all my heart this debilitating and oft misunderstood disease, will soon have a cure. Not just for the afflicted, but their families as well.

It's taken me a long time to post on this blog after seeing the video. It truly is heartbreaking to see. However, I think we are fast approaching a time when schizophrenia will be openly discussed and the stigmas surrounding it will hopefully and mercifully disappear. Already mental illnesses such as Bipolar Disorder and Depression are gaining a place in awareness by the general public, so perhaps the time is near.
