Proper grammar."Get your kicks on ROWT 66 ?"In that context, the only pronunciation we use is "root." We do say ROWT exclusively when we talk about the paths a receiver takes in American football e.g. "he runs good routes." And while I have no illusions over the capture of ENIGMA, if two Spitfires had slammed into each other while it was taking place, we would have referred to it as an ALUMINUM shower, not an aluMINium shower.Cultural differences, learn to live with them.

Petty Semantics. What is right to a yank in english is rarely so.And no exception here."Get your kicks on ROWT 66 ?"Nah, not really. But its "Rowt" you use...I'd bet you also believe that it was the US Navy who got the enigma decoding device in WW2, too eh ?Hollywood history - and Hollywood grammar....

"He may have been born a yank, but he's one of we Brits now...." One of us Brits (plural object). Not we Brits. Though to be accurate, he's one of YOU Brits.

just who is Katz?

I really enjoy Bryson's work as long as he sticks to five themes, the first being books on travel which is (in my opinion) his forte, and also books on language, science, memoirs, and biographies. Whenever there's a passage in one of Bill's works concerning politics, the government etc. I skip it because (in my opinion) that's one of the few subjects about which the man is utterly ignorant. He has an impeccable sense of humor and I still read him, but I always keep an eye out for the politics.

He has the perfect balance of American and English accents.

Man, I've always wanted to know what he sounds like... he sounds nothing like I thought he would. I love him even more now, I can now read his books with this accent.

Doesn't Bryson currently live in New Hampshire with his wife and four children? That doesn't seem particulary anti-american...

lol bill bryson isn't anti America at all he is simply pointing out contrasts between the british and u.s culture. in notes from a small island he seems to generally be pretty proud of bin american im pretty sure he wud lose his american accent a bit when he'd lift in britain for so long, specially as he was still young when he moved here. |
