He used a different version of 9/8 time. He uses it by playing 8 eighth notes (in effect, using a normal 4/4 time signature), just followed by a single eighth note. Thus, the division becomes: 4/8+4/8+1/8=9/8.

Sounds more like 9/8 to me. At least thats was can nicely be counted and "fits".

You know, this is actually an interesting discussion. I'm a huge fan of both Sting and Johnny Cash, and I have to say that J. Cash did it better in 4/4 time. However, the use of 9/8 time in Sting's version gives it an unsettlingfeel; that may have been what Sting was after.

I like that it's in 9/8, the elongated gap between the lines gives you that little bit of time to think about each one and let it settle in. For me, this is a more emotional version than Cash's, but I still like listening to both. Each to his own I guess..
