you right about the magnet, The stick rotatas the magnetic coupling so you can uncuple from rolling stock.

If I'm not wrong, the "big black round thing" is probably a magnetic coupling so that the engines can attach easily to rolling stock. The stick at the back is (probably) an on/off switch for motion. Correct me if I'm wrong pls.

I live in PA and I got them when I was a kid, I havent got them out in probly 10 years. THey came out with alot more then I have. I used to get them at a train shop in Gilbertsville PA. It is called Model bon Ott, not sure on the spelling.
