Cost is a delusion; the question isn't "How much does it cost?" The question is do we have the resources?" And of cours this is a big resounding YES.

We can't all be the next Ecomagination movement. It's an axiom of capitalism that if people want something, then they'll buy it and someone will supply it. If people like a useless product, then it will sell and that's the whole point. So, while an iPhone may seem "vain" and "unnecessary", even something as useful/sustainable as a new bicyle-powered water filter has to be designed, and it usually follows a similar process as something designed by IDEO.

have they invented a device that enables humans to breath underwater w/o lugging an oxygen tank around? like a mini filter that separates the hydrogen from the oxygen?

I doubt you'll see a spy-fish in every household, dude. Who is this toy for? Arm-chair scuba-diving? It is a WASTE. That was my point. I agree we should keep building stuff but not stuff that costs a lot and is useless.

what is the point of reducing carbon footprints and reducing independency on oil if we can't keep people emotionally stable to live? We must take some direction towards the future- these are simply human/user centered proposals. Humans have needs and desires which we must adress. We are all human, after all. We could reduce our energy expenditure and phase out our species altogether, but what purpose would that serve us, as humans?

I want a Spyfish!

Rich kids don't need jobs... it's just that their parents are such misers they want their kids to 'go out and make something of yourself' - Bill Gates isn't even considering leaving his personal fortune to his kids.

Hey now, rich kids need jobs too and there are only so many pr and marketing jobs to go round. Someone has to make a cubicle which is 100 times worse than ever before and be smug about it.
nilbud (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Get out much?
orinocojones (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
What a colossal waste of energy and resources. While the serious world is arguing on reducing carbon footprints and reducing independency on oil, these chumps are making this evermore expensive crap. Disgraceful.
