the kanji is difficult and can only really be learned fluently by living there, it is very hard if you are not in japan, but if you immerse yourself and learn from the source you will get the speaking down in about a year.

Is japanese terribly hard to learn... English isn't my first language, my first language was russian, and i speak english fluently, i've always wanted to learn japanese....

japanese to english and back again is very hard, i learned japanese as my first then english as my second and it was very hard to learn it.
