I've listened to this song many times - cried the first time I heard it. It was so beautiful but to this day I don't get what the message behind the song was. I understand Van Gogh suffered but what message is Don McLean talking about?

I used to sing this at karaoke some years ago when I used to go. Very powerful and sad song. Hope I gave it justice.
