He didn't 'steal' it. It was on an album of cover vesions. Reznor himself said Cash's version owned the song.

This is my favorite song.And I'm not going to say that Cash is better than Reznor, or vice versa. I think that both versions are wonderful looks at great artists and the peak of their powers.
