He wrote some of his songs, including "Respect", but "Shake" was written by Sam Cooke. I think he died before he could record it for a "hit". But there's some live recordings of Sam Cooke singing it.

im so happy to own this on dvd. criterion puts it out, monterey pop festival is so much better then the woodstock footage by means of quality.

Sometimes you hear a voice in a song and you just know it's different and interesting, they give you goosebumps. Ronnie Spector, David Bowie, Colin Blunstone, Elvis and the inimitable Otis Redding. He wrote his own songs, had four great musicians and could cut it live. Booker T and Steve Cropper reckon he was the best and that's good enough for me
