From Cecilia's album "Maria", tribute to the biggest diva of the bel canto era. This aria belongs to the opera "L'elisir d'amore", attributed to Donizetti but actually written by Maria Malibran herself. In here you can hear Cecilia's amazing range (she goes down to low E here) completing her 3 octave range.

Why doesn't she sing more low stuff? I love her voice in the basement, and didn't even know she had these notes!

I thought Malibran was a mezzo who could sing contralto and soprano roles as well.

Her voice is too light for Tosca, plus, one cannot go around singing Rossini and Puccini without paying the price ;) usually lose of high notes, flexibility and intonation.

What an ignorant comment!! This was written specially for (or by) Maria Malibran! a contralto, thus the low E.

Is this a Donizetti approved version or is it just a personalised one by Ms Bartoli? Coz if so then i could sing Queen of the Night and turn it into a Bas/Baritone piece. Complete with low E!!!

I used to think she was a soprano, but the low E convinced me. Still, I think she would make a good Tosca.

Even so. Bartoli has sang pieces composed for soprano in the past and she did it perfectly. Take 'Al tuo seno fortunato' for instance. Just because people feel the need to label singers with 'mezzo' or 'soprano', that shouldn't keep someone from singing a certain piece if, in fact, they can do it well.

It's nice to hear the lows she doesn't shows when she does a recital or concert.

It´s undeniable that Donizetti wrote the original version of this aria, but I meant that many "sopranos" in Donizetti´s days were what we call now Mezzosoprano.
