Download at: http://ehistory.osu.edu/osu/mm... for a larger version. A video about Japanese internment during World War II.Our democracy was forged in a revolution, fought by revolutionaries who saw injustice & wanted to improve their society. I believe that if our democracy is to remain viable, social criticism must remain an essential part of our nation's education. I strongly criticize the way our nation treated its Japanese-American citizens during the Second World War, & the way I make my point is to use the most palpable evidence of the innocence of those citizens they interned. I show pictures of children in my video as a way to contrast the intent of the policy of internment versus the effect of the internment. Whatever any other governments or people did during that horrible war, what we did to our own citizens was wrong. As a citizen, educator, & most importantly, mother living within the United States, I see it as my duty to critique, criticize, & attempt to improve the direction of American society. This video is one way I attempt to reach that end. In my classroom, my goal is to empower students by giving them the knowledge of how their society works, & through this, how to alter its course. I endeavor to teach students about the interconnectedness of the world, that they have a place in it, & that they have the power to direct it. Without knowledge of their position in our democratic society as citizens, students may never realize their ability to direct society. Without the realization that they can change society, students may never try. Such a situation is no better than that of a citizen who is powerless to instigate change. If we are to best educate democratic citizens in our society, social criticism must be taught to our children. Citizens who either believe that their world should remain unchanged, or who believe they have no place in changing our society unlikely to be active in our democracy. Without active citizenry, democracy dies. One of the most important parts of social criticism is debate. The beauty of using imagery to teach history that it evokes discussion, as evidenced by many of your comments. I welcome any video responses showing opposing or alternate viewpoints or covering related subjects.

The definition of a enemy alien, is a citizen of a country that has declared war on the United States. I have posted this definition many times. Among all people of all nations there are those who are racially biased. Try japan. We are not required to accept all those who show up in our nation as citizens. In the case of the Japanese their extreme loyalty to Japan and the Emperor, who was considerd a god, would have prevented first loyalty to the U.S. as required of new citizens to this day.

The Natralization Act denied citizenship to any 'Asians' until 1952. I suppose that just makes them all enemy aliens. You said it's impossible to brainwash the U.S. Population? Damn that's ignorant, America has been racially biased for centuries.

Oh yes definetely. But not to lie. As well as the liberal medias. For instance the weapons of mass destruction thing about Iraque. And how the medias lied about other countries, such as canadas healthcare systems during the clinton administrations cause for a better healthcare system in the U.S. It is of course alright to argue for why we should enter Iraque or why we should not change or healthcare systems, but lying about it should never be an option.

Students be aware many of those posting videos and comments here are trying to misleadyou. It is historical fact the almost every adult interned or relocated was a enemy alien. Almost every american citizen interned was a dependent child of a enemy alien taken along to avoid breaking up families. The children were U.S.citizens because they were born in the U.S.. A enemy alien does not have to be convicted of any thing to be interned or relocated all countries at war did it. encluding Japan.

Ok I can agree on that one. Even so as you said America is able to fool people and while that is not brainwashing it is still misinformative information if you can call it that (english is not my first language so having a debate in english is a little more difficult for me than many others), yes you are right there is a free press in America and that is a huge difference but there is still misleading in American medias and from the government.

The diference between American society and pre WW II Japanese society and its brainwashing is that america has always had a free press and free speech so it is impossible to brain wash the U.S. population. You might be able to fool them and sway puplic opinion for a while but this is not brain washing.

U.S.A. accepts the small crime, but does not accepts the big crime.
