Silent Swing was sent off as the 6-5 favourite in Sunday's $185,000 Des Smith Classic Pace at Rideau Carleton Raceway, and the gelding was in no mood to disappoint his army of backers.Starting from Post 2 in the 27th edition of Rideau's marquee pacing event for driver Paul MacDonell, the six-year-old son of Northern Luck settled for the two-hole to the quarter station in :26.4 behind pacesetter Fox Valley Tribal (Denis St. Pierre) .MacDonell tipped his charge to the outside as soon as the field swung into the stretch, and the brush to the front proved to be a successful one for the Jean Louis Arsenault trainee.Silent Swing carved out remaining panels of :54.4 and 1:22.1 before finishing off his foes with a :28.3 final frame en route to the 1:50.4 decision. Western Shore (Jody Jamieson) overcame an adventurous trip to finish second and Eagle Luck (Sylvain Filion) took home third prize.Owned by Dave Shea of Campbellville, ON and Reg Petitpas of Shediac Bridge, NB, Silent Swing notched his fifth win of the season and the 29th of his career. The $92,500 payday pushed his lifetime earnings to $1,078,379.(c)2008 StandardbredCanada
