He always capos on the 3rd fret - in all the times I've seen him. Here, his 5th string is tuned down to G, an 8va below the 3rd string. His 6th string is either left on E, or tuned up to G, doubling the 5th string, can't tell. But the upper 4 strings are definitely still in standard.He only plays w/ his index finger w/ a few thunbs thrown in.

He's actually playing the Guitar like the Ngoni or Xalam. Ali's and Vieux's playing style is based on the Songhai tradition which is a different culture and empire than Mali/Senegambia. The Ngoni/Xalam and Kora were the ancient tools of the Griots(Bards) of the Songhai and Mali empires, respectively.Like the imperial cultures which spawned them they are very similar but also very distinct.Ali sought to bridge that divide, and other, with his album "In The Heart of The Moon".
