Lyrical is a fusion of ballet and jazz. Modern has prescribed techniques involving contractions of the torso, use of weight, release etc. There are also distinct aesthetic differences and artistic approaches that modern sometimes posseses, (it often requires active participation of the viewer ie what does this MEAN aside from the visual stiimulous of the dancers moving through space).
