I think it's not uncommon for fans of metal to pick up Jazz (it happened to me). I think it has to do with an attraction to complex musical structures.

Wow, great video. Monk was a weird guy, but one of the great innovators of jazz composition, a true musical genius. Those discordant chords that just fit...Check out the trademark vigorous foot-tapping you see in the later part of the video. He would tap his feet to a rhythm that existed only in his head and improvise a great deal in performances- a difficult but inspiring guy to be a sideman for.

Actually "epistrophy" in Greek means 'return', so it is very likely Monk knew what he was doing. It is not the first time artists invent words, replace letters or play with words in any way. In anything less, this is artistic ingenuity at work.
