Tiny particles of silver designed to kill germs are being put into socks to control odor. But as this ScienCentral News video explains, what happens to that nanosilver later is concerning some scientists.

ahhh.. remember the 'benefits' of asbestos and lead in gasoline???Just sayin'...

part 2 of my own - nano = Technology to fix what technology broke. I don't like this logic, am I the only one?

We can play a game. You name the technology and it's benefits, I name it's harms, this will be fun. "I support the "strong" nanotechnology applications, the ones that will provide cures for cancer & all diseases, repair pollution on the atomic level & put soil in it's most perfect state so that it grows food in places that currently can not." <- idealism is sweet isn't it. Food production is not the problem, food placement is. Maybe we don't need corn to feed cows, i.e. waste of energy.

(part2) I support the "strong" nanotechnology applications, the ones that will provide cures for cancer & all diseases, repair pollution on the atomic level & put soil in it's most perfect state so that it grows food in places that currently can not. These are the nano applications that could really help the world be a better place. When it comes to nanoparticles and/or socks I understand that it is just one of the (independent - & they all really are independent) steps towards the future.

It is true that there are always precautions that need to be tended to but when the benefits are worth it, the work to make it safe is as well. For example - when we get hurt or are sick - we go to the hospital to get help, we may have surgery that has risks and we sign on the dotted line because the benefits outweigh the risks, we may take medicine that has side effects - when we use our computers even, we could get a virus and loose our data, but again the benefits are worth it to us.

I very much look forward to the cures, repaired pollution and no hunger that a world of future nano applications could provide.<-- Promethian thinking at it's finest. Technology is a double edged sword.

Every nano product that creates an item is made differently - even the same application and the chemistry to get there can all be done differently. So every nano product is not the same, especially when it comes to particles vs. strong nano applications. I very much look forward to the cures, repaired pollution and no hunger that a world of future nano applications could provide.

keep working and thank you for the response.

"Let's not mess this up!"

Your intuition is good, but it gets more complicated. One product, Samsung's SilverCare washing machine, uses silver to sanitize clothing, but because it creates ions (individual, charged atoms) some scientists think that the silver combines to form harmless salts (that no longer have antimicrobial properties) before they make it to water treatment plants. Research is going on now to follow fate and persistence of ionic and nano silver in aquifers, etc.
