The "snap to grid" is called inferencing, and it can't be turned off. In the case you describe, I recommend learning about inference locking, which would let you lock that direction you are drawing so you wouldn't need to worry about the other inferences SketchUp "snaps" to.

Is there a way to not "snap to grid" while drawing? There are times when you want to draw a line that intersects with an angle, but you might want it slightly left of center (or any "snap to" point). SketchUp thinks you are aiming for the center and forces yo to place it there. Pulling away from center makes you select a point at 'X' distance away from center to avoid the "snap to". I find myself zooming closer and closer to avoid that feature, but was hoping there was an alternate method.
