it's called 'stop motion animation'. you take a picture, move something, and take the picture of the thing moved. it takes quite a long time.

as far as i know, it is not the software, but the camera. When you use a DV cam, it can not record exactly ONE picture. I think they used a digital photocameraa or a 9 mm film camera (old type). Correct me if i am wrong.
