read somewhere that oshima had image of peter o'toole's lawrence of arabia in mind. the brit archetype, so david fits that in his own amusing way. plus there's a duel of the androgynous popstar going on - both bowie & sakamoto's image and iconic status in their own countries.

agreed- conti was the anchor of the movie. david in flashback i always thought of as his adult consciousness stuck in the time warp he's forced to relive. having a more "convincing" young actor would lose that surreal feeling. he's watching the same shameful episode play over and over.

They should've gotten a younger actor to play David in the flashback scenes. C'mon nobody's gonna believe he's a teenager. What was his age then, 35? Not even heavy foundation could cover up his age.I wasn't expecting Ruichi to be good in this one, but he did pretty good.But Conti is the star....and Beat.
