Ok let's say it's a repressed giggle, like a titter
Rrambler (August 29, 2008 at 4:22 pm)
what giggle? i don't hear a giggle?
rogieltje (August 29, 2008 at 9:51 am)
You mean his drunken giggle? ;)

No no, you're not on your own. I completely agree with you. :)

Lol, looks like I'm on my own. What I really love about this vid is Thom's wry little smile at 1.10 like he's thinking 'fuck me, we are rocking' and suddenly remembers he's about to sing. . .

It's not until I compare this cover with the original that I am reminded of the sheer volume of expression that Ian Curtis could generate. For me the quality of the recording is not as important as the performance.

. . .but at least we can agree that it's a beautiful song ;-)

We'll have to agree to disagree ;-)) I think Radiohead bring the best out of this song, especially the guitar and intense vocals. Sure, New Order is technically 3/4 of the original band that made this, but they can't do it justice without a decent singer. Watch any NO performance of this song and Barney is characteristically obsessive about hitting the right notes on guitar and trying to sing at the same time, but Radiohead play it as though its their own song.

TrippleNipple, I respect your opinion...BUT...the New Order version is definitely better. This is a great cover though, definitely the best cover of this song that I've ever heard anyhow. I agree that Barney's voice isn't the best in every song...but Barney does Ceremony proper. It is sad though, that JD didn't get a good recording of this song...shame really. Beautiful tune none the less.

I'm not sure what makes this cover stand out for me, but I can't help coming back to it. Joy Division would have made a definitive version given the chance, but I prefer this guitar-heavy version with Thom really getting into it than any other I've heard. I know it's blasphemy to say it, but JD never recorded this song properly and Barney can't sing well, so this this is as definitive as it gets for me. . . |
